Stages of Bangladesh Education System

The education system in Bangladesh is formulated according to the National Education Policy and is divided into three main streams: primary, secondary, and higher education. Alongside general education, there are parallel systems of madrasa education and technical education. The use of Bengali language as a medium of instruction is emphasized.

Pre-Primary Education

Age: 4-5 years

Details

Age: 4-5 years

Main Objective: Preparing children for school

Availability: Available in government and private primary schools

At this stage, children are taught through play, songs, drawing, and basic social skills to prepare them for primary education.

Primary Education

Grade: 1-5

Details

Grade: 1st - 5th

Age: 6-10 years

Special Feature: Compulsory and free education

Institutions: Government primary schools, Ibtedai Madrasas

The government distributes free textbooks at this level and runs scholarship programs for students.

Junior Secondary Education

Grade: 6-8

Details

Grade: 6th - 8th

Streams: Available in general and madrasa streams

Assessment: Previously JSC/JDC, now continuous assessment

At this stage, students learn basic subjects like science, mathematics, Bengali, English, social sciences, and religious studies.

Secondary Education

Grade: 9-10

Details

Grade: 9th - 10th

Groups:

Examinations:

  • SSC (General Education)
  • Dakhil (Madrasa)
  • SSC Vocational (Technical)

Higher Secondary Education

Grade: 11-12

  • Alim (Madrasa)
  • HSC Vocational (Technical)

At this level, students choose groups according to their career goals and study in colleges.

Madrasa Education

Equivalent Levels

  • Ibtedai → Equivalent to Primary Education
  • Dakhil → Equivalent to SSC
  • Alim → Equivalent to HSC
  • Fazil → Equivalent to Bachelor Degree
  • Kamil → Equivalent to Master's Degree

The madrasa education system combines religious education with modern education.

b. Master / Postgraduate

Duration: 1-2 years

Higher education is provided in public and private universities in Bangladesh.

Advanced Studies

a. MPhil (Master of Philosophy)

Research-based degree which usually takes 1-2 years to complete.

b. PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)

The highest level of education in Bangladesh, Doctor of Philosophy. Usually takes 3-5 years for research and thesis submission.

At this level, students mainly contribute to creating new knowledge and scientific research.

The main objective of this education is to expand the boundaries of knowledge through research and to discover new theories and technologies. PhD programs are offered in public and some private universities in Bangladesh.
